*”I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”* — John 15:1-5 (NIV)

Do you ever feel like you’re working so hard, yet seeing so little? You’re pouring yourself out in service, in your job, in your family, in your ministry—and you’re exhausted. You’re trying to be a better person. You’re trying to be more patient, more loving, more generous. You’re reading your Bible, saying your prayers, going to church. And yet, something feels… stuck. The changes you long to see in your life aren’t happening. The peace that Jesus promises feels elusive. The joy that should mark your life feels forced, fragile, and fleeting.

If that resonates with you—if you find yourself nodding even as you read this—We want you to know that you are not alone. And more importantly, We want you to hear this truth that comes straight from the heart of Jesus: the problem was never your effort. The problem isn’t that you’re trying hard enough. The problem is that you might be trying to bear fruit as a branch that has forgotten it’s connected to the vine.

You see, our friend, there is a secret to spiritual growth that Jesus Himself shared with His disciples on the very night He was arrested. It was one of His final teachings, a precious gift whispered in the shadow of the cross. He didn’t give them a ten-step program. He didn’t hand them a to-do list. He gave them a picture—a metaphor so simple and profound that it would sustain them for the rest of their lives. He told them, “I am the vine, and you are the branches.” And then He made a promise that should change everything about how you approach your walk with Him: if you remain in Him, you will bear much fruit. Apart from Him, you can do nothing.

Can you feel the weight of that? It’s not that you can do a little without Jesus. It’s not that you can do some things without Him but need His help for the big stuff. Jesus says, plainly and beautifully, that apart from Him, you can do *nothing*. Not the ministry. Not the self-improvement. Not the character transformation. Not even the small, everyday acts of kindness you’re so desperately trying to offer to a world that seems to be unraveling. Without Him, it’s all empty. Without Him, it’s all striving. Without Him, you’re like a branch that’s been cut off, lying on the ground, growing dry and brittle—still shaped like a branch, still painted green maybe, but with no life flowing through it. And no matter how hard that branch pushes itself toward fruitfulness, it simply cannot produce anything. Because fruit isn’t produced by the branch. Fruit is produced by the vine.

But here’s the glorious, hope-filled news: when you are connected to Jesus, when He is present, working, active, and guiding in your life, everything begins to change. The same life that flows through Him flows through you. The same resurrection power that raised Him from the dead begins to pulsate through your veins. And fruit—real fruit, lasting fruit, supernatural fruit that you could never manufacture on your own—begins to appear in your life, almost effortlessly, like apples appearing on an apple tree that’s simply doing what it was made to do.

Think about an orchard for a moment. The farmer doesn’t stand in his orchard every morning, shouting at the branches to try harder. He doesn’t shake the tree and say, “Come on now, produce!” He doesn’t threaten the branch or guilt-trip it into bearing fruit. No, the wise farmer does only two things: he prunes what needs to be pruned, and he makes sure the branches remain connected to the vine. And when they are, fruit just happens. It’s not forced. It’s not manufactured. It’s the natural, beautiful, organic result of life flowing through the branch.

That’s what Jesus wants for you. He wants you to stop striving and start abiding. He wants you to stop running on empty and start drinking deeply from the source of living water. He wants you to understand that your entire spiritual life—your character, your peace, your joy, your love, your impact, your purpose—is not about what you produce for Him, but about what He produces through you when you’re connected to Him.

Here’s the question you might be asking right now: “What does it actually mean to remain in Him?” And that’s a beautiful question. It means so much more than just praying before meals or going through the motions of religious activity. To remain or abide in Jesus means to live in constant, conscious awareness of His presence. It means to make your home in His love, to rest in His finished work, to trust His guidance in every decision, to speak to Him throughout the day as naturally as you’d speak to your closest friend. It means to surrender your agenda, your timeline, your plans, and your expectations to Him, and to say every single morning, “Jesus, I’m Yours. Live through me today. Think through me. Love through me. Work through me. Be present in me, and let whatever You want to do in my life be done.”

The brilliant preacher Andrew Murray once wrote, “The branch has no anxious care, no responsibility, no fear of bringing forth fruit. It simply rests in the vine and lets the vine bring forth the fruit. And so the believer has but one duty—to abide in Christ. And then the fruit-bearing is entirely the work of Christ.” Can you feel the freedom in that? Your job is not to produce spiritual fruit by your own effort. Your job is to stay so close to Jesus, so surrendered to His Spirit, so immersed in His Word, so open to His leading, that His life naturally flows through you and bears fruit that glorifies God.

Now let us ask you something, friend. How much of your Christian life right now is you, and how much is Jesus? If someone were to study your schedule, your thought life, your emotional patterns, your reactions to stress, and your deepest desires, what would they conclude about the source of your life? Would they see a soul at rest in the vine, or would they see a frantic branch flopping around on the ground, trying to act like it’s still alive?

We want to tell you something that might sound a little shocking. Jesus doesn’t need your performance. He doesn’t need you to earn His love or impress Him with your achievements. He already loves you with an everlasting love, and His love was proven once and for all on the cross. But here’s what He does want—He wants your presence. He wants your heart. He wants a relationship with you that is real, intimate, and alive. And not because He’s needy or lacking in Himself, but because He knows that this connection is the only way you will ever experience the abundant life He came to give you.

Yes, our friend, Jesus benefits when you abide in Him. Not because your work adds something that was missing from Him, but because your fruitfulness brings Him glory. When your life reflects His character, when your acts of love and kindness point people to Him, when the peace that passes understanding is visible in your face, when the joy of the Lord is your strength, He is honored. When the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—is evident in your life, it’s like a spotlight shining on the Vine. People may not be able to see Christ directly, but they can see what Christ produces in a life that’s connected to Him. And when they see that fruit, they’re drawn to the source.

Think about it this way. When you bite into a perfect, juicy, sweet apple, you don’t thank the apple. You thank the tree. And when people experience your love, your kindness, your patience, your generosity—when they see something in you that is clearly beyond human ability—they may not know how to explain it at first. But if you’ve been faithfully abiding, they’ll start to ask questions. They’ll want to know the secret of your peace. They’ll want to know the source of your joy. And you’ll have the incredible privilege of pointing them back to the Vine, back to Jesus. The fruit you bear becomes a doorway through which others can encounter the Living God. And that, dear friend, is how God’s plans and purposes are accomplished through you.

This is also how God’s will is fulfilled *in* you. Let us share something that might feel like both a warning and a comfort. God the Father is the gardener, and the scripture tells us that He prunes us so that we can produce even more fruit. Pruning isn’t comfortable. It usually doesn’t feel good at the time. It might feel like a setback, a loss, a disappointment, a closed door, a painful lesson. But if you’re connected to the vine, you can trust that the pruning is purposeful. The Gardener knows exactly what He’s doing. He’s removing the things in your life that are draining your energy, distracting your attention, and hindering your fruitfulness. He’s cutting away the dead branches, the old habits, the unhealthy attachments, the worldly desires that are blocking the flow of His life through you. And sometimes, the pruning hurts because He’s removing things that you’ve grown attached to—even things that feel necessary. But He’s not doing it to hurt you. He’s doing it to make space for something greater. He’s doing it so that you’ll bear even more fruit and fulfill the purposes He has for you.

And do you know what the purpose is? In the same passage, Jesus says, “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” God’s plan for your life isn’t just about your personal happiness (though He does love to give good gifts to His children). His plan is that you would demonstrate what it looks like to be a fully alive, radically transformed follower of Jesus. He’s showing the world through you what a life surrendered to His Son looks like. You are walking proof of the gospel, a living epistle, a letter from Christ written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God. And when you realize that, your daily walk with Jesus takes on cosmic significance. Your morning quiet time isn’t just a religious obligation—it’s the time when you’re being filled with the life that will overflow into everything you do. Your prayers aren’t just a list of requests—they’re the intimate conversations that sustain your connection to the Vine. Your obedience to the Holy Spirit’s promptings isn’t just rule-keeping—it’s the sacred surrender that allows God’s purposes to be accomplished through your life.

So, let us ask you once more, beloved. Do you want to see growth in your life? Real growth. Deep, lasting, formative growth that changes who you are at the deepest level? Then stop trying to grow by your own effort. Start growing in your relationship with Jesus. Prioritize Him above everything else. Let your identity be rooted in His love. Let your life be saturated with His Word. Let your heart be aligned with His will. Let your mind be renewed by His truth.

And as you do, something beautiful will happen. Like a branch drinking deeply from the vine, His life will begin to flow through you with miraculous power. And the fruit that appears in your life—the character, the peace, the joy, the influence, the lasting impact—will be more than you could ever ask or imagine.

This week, we want you to take one meaningful step toward deeper abiding. Let me offer you some practical ways to grow in your relationship with Jesus so that His life can flow through you:

**First, choose a consistent time to be with Jesus.** Find a quiet place and a regular time each day where you can sit in His presence without distraction. It doesn’t have to be long. It just has to be real. Close your eyes and say, “Jesus, I’m here. I want to know You more. Speak to my heart.” Then open His Word and let Him meet you there. Read slowly. Journal what He’s saying to you. Allow His truth to sink deep into your soul.

**Second, practice His presence throughout the day.** When you wake up in the morning, whisper a prayer of surrender. When you’re driving to work, talk to Jesus about your concerns. When you’re eating a meal, thank Him for His provision. When you’re walking, invite Him to walk with you. And when something stresses you out or brings you joy, share it with Him right away. Make Him the centerpiece of your day—not just your Sunday morning.

**Third, invite Jesus into your process.** Before making your schedule, ask Him what He wants you to do. Before making a decision, ask for His wisdom. Before responding in anger or frustration, pause and ask Him for His patience. Let Him be active and guiding in your choices, and you’ll be amazed at the difference His presence makes.

**Fourth, examine what Jesus might be pruning in you.** Ask the Father, “What, in my life, is hindering my fruitfulness? What do You want to remove?” It might be a habit, a relationship, a worry, or a desire. When He reveals it, surrender it to Him. Trust that His pruning is an act of love, preparing you for greater fruit.

And **finally, share what you’re learning.** Fruit is meant to be shared. As you grow in Jesus, look for opportunities to bless others—with your words, your service, your generosity, your time. Every time you do, you’re bearing fruit that glorifies the Father and draws others toward the Vine.

*Jesus, my true Vine, thank You for loving me and inviting me into the deepest connection my soul could ever know. I confess that I’ve often tried to do life on my own, striving and struggling, trying to produce fruit by my own strength. Forgive me for those times when I’ve forgotten that apart from You, I can do nothing.*

*Today, I choose to abide in You. I choose to remain in Your love. I release my striving, my fear, my anxiety, and my need to control. I hand You my schedule, my dreams, my relationships, and my plans. I want Your life to flow through me like sap flows through a branch, bringing life and fruit that I could never manufacture on my own.*

*Father, Gardener of my life, prune whatever needs to be pruned. Remove anything that’s keeping me from bearing the abundant fruit You created me to produce. I trust Your process, even when it hurts. I believe that You are working everything together for my good.*

*Holy Spirit, empower me to walk in constant awareness of Jesus’ presence. Make Him more real to me than anyone or anything else. Let His words dwell richly in my heart, and let His love overflow through everything I do and say.*

*Lord Jesus, I want to bear fruit that glorifies You. I want my life to point people to You. I want to be a branch so connected to the Vine that Your life is unmistakably visible in me. May the fruit I bear draw others toward Your love and accomplish the good works that God prepared in advance for me to walk in.*
